Cape Saint Marie starts at the beach of Porto Marie (Playa PortoMari) , continuing all the way south around the cape and its light tower towards Boca St Marie and its inland saline lake. The white beach of Port Marie is a popular place with a nice bar, basic toilets and showers, parasols for hire and great snorkeling and diving. There are also quite a few walking tracks, from the well-known trail Banda Abao to shorter local walks such as the Seru Mateo Trail with its breathtaking views and variety of plant and animal life. Inland towns you might visit are Jan Kok, the Roman Catholic Church at St Willibrordus (San Willibrordo) or the by flamingos populated salt lakes.
After the devastation of Porto Marie's own reef by hurricane Lenny in 1999, local authorities decided to place more than 200 concrete reef balls in the shallow bay offshore. This artificial reef has a lot of nooks and crannies offering the perfect habitat for juvenile fish, invertebrates and hard and soft corals. Besides this snorkel trail with reef balls, Porto Marie or the Valley is also a popular dive site with two parallel reefs creating a great canyon in between.
