Willemstad, Central Curacao, is known for its picturesque houses, beautiful natural harbors, floating markets and colonial forts such as Fort Amsterdam, Fort Oranje Nassau, Fort Waterfort and Fort Riffort. Another highlight is the more than 200 meter long Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge (Swinging Old Lady), originally built in 1888 and considered as the longest floating pedestrian bridge in the world. It connects the two districts Punda and Otrobanda, the beautiful harbor entrance St Anna Bay and Schottegat Lake. Other attractions well worth a visit are the Santa Anna Basiliek, the famous district Scharloo with its colorful houses and Landhuis Bloemhof, a former plantation residence.
Bullen Bay (Curacao Terminal) is one of the few deep water bays in the Caribbean, making it an excellent port for large cruise ships and transport vessels (mainly oil from Curacao's refinery). Boca Saint Michiel or Boca Sami is known for its excellent walks past salt lakes and flamingoes. Also a hike up towards the breathtaking views from the Sint Michielsberg is well worth your struggle. Other activities include a cave exploration trip inside Hato Cave with its stalagmites, stalactites and bats. The caves are located inside steep limestone cliffs near the dry, barren in cactus covered Hato Plains. Jan Thiel Bay is mainly known for its Sea Aquarium and Ostrich Farm. However, it is the resting place of some of Curacao's most popular wreck dives such as the Superior Producer, SS Oranje Nassau and the wreck Saba. Besides fabulous scuba diving and snorkeling, the capital Willemstad offers a wide range of activities.
