This impressive stretch of reef does not get much traffic and remains in very good condition. To reach St. Marie or Saint Marie by car, head to the town of Willibrordus, take a left at the big church, and follow the signs to Habitat Resort. After checking in with security at the main gate, take a left at the bottom of the hill near the resort and follow that until it turns to dirt, then take your first right. This road dead-ends in a small parking area near the water. Gear up at the car and take the rickety steps down to a small coral rubble beach. Most of the time you’ll be the only one here. There is some tree shade, but no services, though the nearby resort offers all amenities, including a full service dive shop.
Beware of several shallow coral formations when entering the water; they can cause some nasty cuts. Snorkelers will enjoy the shallow terrace and the patches of Elkhorn coral close to shore. To reach the drop-off swim straight out approximately 100 yards. The drop-off starts in 20 feet of water and falls below 120 feet. Current is generally light here and both directions are good. The reef is nicely grown with Rope Sponges, Pillar Coral, Sea Whips, Sea Rods, and Sheet Coral. Look for Cornetfish, Cowfish, Barracuda, Doctorfish, and schools of Creole Wrasse.
